A veteran Louisiana firefighter is facing drug charges following his arrest earlier this month at the Texas/Mexico border. Border Control Agents and officers with the Drug Enforcement Administration cited Michael Eric Moscona, a firefighter in St. John Parish with possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance.

Moscona was detained at the US/Mexico border near McAllen Texas on June 17th after authorities discovered a little more than 150 pounds of marijuana in the locked toolbox of his truck. The fact that Moscona was discovered with so much pot lead authorities to determine that the drugs were apparently meant for distribution.

Law enforcement agents asked to search Moscona's vehicle after he appeared to be nervous and skittish during questioning at the border crossing. A K-9 officer was brought in to inspect the truck. That's when the stash of pot was discovered in the toolbox.

Moscona has been placed on administrative leave with pay by the St. John Fire Department pending an internal investigation. Moscona was allowed to leave Texas and return to Louisiana on June 24 after a judge granted a free signature bond, according to court records.
