A Louisiana law enforcement agency has arrested a 24-year-old mother in connection with the death of her 8-month-old child, who was being treated for multiple serious injuries, including broken bones.

The arrest happened Wednesday, March 19, a week after the child's injuries were first reported to police officials.

What Is Known About The Case?

According to a release by the Franklinton Police Department on their social media site, they have arrested Autumn Hano Harper for one count of First Degree Murder in the death of her child.

An investigation into what happened with the baby began on Wednesday, March 12.

Franklington Police Chief Justin Brown said the child was brought to the Riverside Medical Center in Washington Parish; staff at the facility contacted law enforcement officials after they found the baby to have "multiple healing and current broken bones."

The child was then flown to Children's Hospital in New Orleans. On Monday, March 17, the 8-month-old died from the abuse.

What Did Brown Learn While Talking To The Mother?

When Louisiana News Network interviewed Brown, he told their interviewer that the mother, Harper, said in statements to police that there had been some abuse of the child over a prolonged period. Brown calls the death of this baby "absolutely heartbreaking."

Brown went on to tell Louisiana Radio Network that after spending much time talking to Harper, "mental health issues will play a significant role in the case."

Harper was arrested and booked into the Washington Parish Jail.
