Hayley Arceneaux is a survivor of childhood cancer thanks to the miracles of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, and now thanks to the folks at SpaceX she's been chosen for the upcoming all-civilian Inspiration4 mission into outer space.

Growing up in St. Francisville, Hayley was just 10 when she was diagnosed with "osteosarcoma in her left femur just above the knee" according to theadvocate.com.

Arceneaux's treatment at St. Jude included what was at the time a breakthrough surgery, in which doctors removed and replaced the majority of her femur with a prosthetic device that was designed to grow with her body as a regular bone would.

As with countless St. Jude patients and parents, after beating cancer Arceneaux went on to become an ambassador for the hospital telling her story, eventually becoming a physician assistant at St. Jude where she currently works.

Now, the 29-year-old is going into space.

SpaceX Inspiration4 All-Civilian Mission

Hayley Arceneaux of Baton Rouge/St. Francisville has been named as the second crew member of the SpaceX Inspiration4 mission and will occupy the seat representing Hope in honor of St. Jude.

Arceneaux says in the official St. Jude press release “It’s an incredible honor to join the Inspiration4 crew. This seat represents the hope that St. Jude gave me—and continues to give families from around the world, who, like me, find hope when they walk through the doors of St. Jude.”

As part of the Inspiration4 crew, Arceneaux will undergo commercial astronaut training by SpaceX, including orbital mechanics, operating in micro-gravity, zero gravity, stress testing and more.

The SpaceX Inspiration4 will launch from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida and is scheduled to take place at some point during the 4th quarter of this year (2021).
