Grambling State University's new head volleyball coach Chelsey Lucas made a bold move earlier this week -- she cut the entire team.

Lucas notified the 19 players on the roster that a change was being made.

According to those players, Lucas conducted individual meetings and told each that their scholarships would not be renewed.

Maurisa Harris, a junior on the team, said that players were told that their scholarships would not be renewed based on their performances at recent practices this semester.

Harris said the coach's decision has left many of her teammates scrambling to find another program to transfer to in the offseason.

Lucas has only been the coach of the team since February.

GSU Athletics Communications Director Brian Howard said that athletic leaders knew the new coach would be making some changes to the roster, but they did not know to what extent.

“It’s her decision to make, and she’s got some quality players coming on board. I think 13 or 14 are coming on board. So, I hate to say out with the old, but in with the new a little bit,” Howard said.

GSU Athletic Director Trayveon Scott issued the following statement:

Just as the transfer portal empowers student-athletes, our coaches are also empowered to make the decisions they deem necessary to advance their programs.

It has been reported that some of the players who were released were planning to hold a meeting to discuss possible courses of action.

By the way, Chelsey Lucas is a former volleyball player at Grambling State. She graduated in 2007 and was the SWAC Defensive Player of the Year in 2006.
