A fatal vehicle crash early this morning on Walker Road has left one person dead and two others injured, adding to the growing toll of traffic incidents in Lafayette over the Labor Day weekend.

The crash occurred in the 800 block of Walker Road, where a vehicle traveling east left the roadway, struck a ditch and a fence, and overturned. According to Lafayette Police Department Sgt. Matthew J. Benoit, three occupants were inside the vehicle at the time of the crash. Two individuals were transported to a local hospital with minor injuries and are in stable condition, while a third occupant died from injuries sustained in the crash.

The incident heard by a nearby resident who was awakened by a “loud boom” that shook their home. They took to the Ring app to inquire about the noise, with another neighbor suggesting that the vehicle may have struck a utility pole before flipping.

Lafayette Police initially reported that one occupant was in critical condition, and the investigation into the crash remains ongoing. Walker Road near Huval Street was closed following the accident, with motorists being directed to use University Avenue or West Willow Street as alternate routes, but roads have since reopened.

The Lafayette Police Department’s Traffic Investigators are working to determine the cause of the crash. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.

Residents are urged to be cautious on the roads, particularly during this busy holiday weekend.
