An Opelousas man is thankful to be alive after his car was struck by a train Friday.

St. Landry Parish Sheriff Bobby Guidroz says 29-year-old Levar Babineaux of Opelousas was crossing the railroad tracks at the intersection of U.S. Highway 190 and Frank Road near Lawtell.

Witnesses at the scene and crew members on an approaching train say the train was blowing its horn as it neared the intersection. Babineaux says he neither heard nor saw the train as he crossed over the tracks.

Babineaux was taken to a local hospital for treatment, Guidroz says. He was also ticketed for failing to yield.
