Pedestrian Dies After Intentionally Stepping in Front of 18-Wheeler on I-49 in Lafayette

Lafayette Police have provided new details regarding the significant vehicle crash that occurred earlier today on I-49 Southbound near the Gloria Switch Overpass, according to Sgt. Matthew J. Benoit of the Lafayette Police Department, the incident involved an 18-wheeler and a pedestrian standing on the shoulder of the interstate.

Investigators determined that the pedestrian intentionally stepped into the roadway directly in front of the southbound 18-wheeler. The pedestrian was transported to a local hospital in critical condition but has since succumbed to the injuries sustained in the crash.

The initial incident, reported around 7:04 a.m., led to the full shutdown of I-49 Southbound. All traffic was diverted to alternate routes, causing significant delays for morning commuters. The roadways have reopened since the crash.
