Two Saturday night crashes claimed the life of two pedestrians along the U.S. 90 corridor.

LSP Master Trooper Brooks David reported 34-year-old Jason Newburn, of Hattiesburg, Miss., was killed while walking southbound along U.S. 90 near La. 329 (Avery Island Road).

Newburn was struck by an SUV driven by Ab Coulan of New Orleans at around 8:30 p.m. Coulan submitted to a chemical breath test and was not impaired.

An Iberia Parish Coroner's Office representative pronounced Newburn dead at the scene.

Then, about 50 miles southeast of the Iberia Parish crash, 13-year-old Allyson Duval, of Morgan City, was killed while walking along Lake Palourde Road.

St. Mary Parish Sheriff's spokeswoman Lt. Traci Landry reported 32-year-old Michael Nguyen, of Amelia, struck the teen at approximately 9 p.m. Saturday.

Duval was transported to Teche Regional Medical Center where she was pronounced dead by a representative of the St. Mary Parish Coroner's Office.

David warns pedestrians should wear light-colored or reflective clothing and should always avoid walking on the roadway in dark areas.  Pedestrians must also assume that approaching motorists cannot see them, especially at night.  Crossing roadways only in well-lit, designated areas and always walking facing traffic, will enhance safety for pedestrians.
