Repairs to part of New Orleans streetcar line start July 15

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Part of New Orleans' streetcar line will be shut down for repairs to its electric system, starting at 5 a.m. July 15.

The system is powered by overhead electric wires strung from poles. WWL-TV reports that 15 of the poles are heavily corroded and need replacement.

The work is expected to take until mid-September along part of the St. Charles Avenue streetcar route, which is popular with tourists. The area being repaired includes a stretch of mansions and towering live oaks. It also runs between Audubon Park and Tulane and Loyola universities.

In the meantime, buses will carry passengers on the St. Charles Avenue line from South Carrollton and Claiborne avenues to St. Charles Avenue and Jena Street.

The work is not expected to affect nearby traffic.
