Report Says Accidents Happen At Louisiana Refineries Once A Day
Several environmental groups in Louisiana released a report today that says refineries across the state average an accident a day. Ann Rofles with the Louisiana Bucket Brigade says these accidents lead to not only worker safety issues, but sometimes hurts the environment. Rofles says more needs to be done to prevent these accidents.
The State Department of Environmental Quality is reviewing the report and has no comment at this time. Rofles says the majority of these accidents are due to corroded piping in the ground. Rofles
says refineries have maintenance issues that could be reduced by simply hiring more workers which could also help the economy. The report says the two Exxon refineries in the state were responsible
for a third of the accidents. Rofles is calling for vigorous federal enforcement.
