VIDEO: Horse Wildly Gallops Down Louisiana I-10 Bridge Before Being Captured by NOPD
NEW ORLEANS, La. – Late-night drivers on I-10 in New Orleans got a wild surprise earlier this week when a horse was spotted galloping full speed across the Claiborne Avenue Bridge.
The scene looked like something straight out of a western, captured on video and posted to the @empoweryounola Instagram page, showing the horse weaving through traffic as stunned (and possibly influenced) motorists tried to make sense of the bizarre sight.
Thankfully, the runaway steed’s journey ended safely thanks to the quick work of the New Orleans Police Department’s Mounted Unit. NOPD later shared an update on social media showing the horse safe and sound after officers located him inside a University Medical Center parking garage.
“WOAH! Our Mounted Officers found this guy horsing around in a parking garage last night after he took a nerve-wracking gallop down the interstate,” NOPD posted to Instagram and Twitter. “Luckily, he’s safe, his scrapes have been treated and he's resting at our stables while we work to reunite him with his owner.”
Police say the horse suffered a few minor cuts but was treated and transferred to the LASPCA. The organization confirmed the horse had escaped from its stable and was likely spooked before taking off on what turned into a city-wide spectacle.
“It was a scary situation for the horse and his owner,” said LASPCA’s Christian Moons. “Thankfully, it ended with a happy reunion.”
As of Thursday afternoon, the horse was back home, safe and recovering from his short-lived taste of city life.
Just another heads up for Louisiana drivers: keep your eyes on the road. You never know what you might see — especially on I-10.
