Saints Roster Cuts: Surprising Moves as New Orleans Trims Down to 53
As the New Orleans Saints finalized their roster on Tuesday, several unexpected decisions baffled fans and analysts. Always a day of mixed emotions, this year's roster moves were marked by notable cuts and a few surprises that could shape the team's path as they head into the 2024 NFL season.
Biggest Surprise: Johnathan Abram’s Release
Perhaps the most shocking move was the release of veteran safety Johnathan Abram. Just last season, Abram appeared to solidify his role in the Saints' secondary, especially after a strong finish where he racked up 14 tackles and an interception in the final two games. With Marcus Maye’s departure, many expected Abram to step in as the starter alongside Tyrann Mathieu. Instead, the Saints opted to go with Will Harris, who impressed throughout training camp and seemingly edged out Abram for the job. This move raised eyebrows, especially since Abram was a vocal leader, even delivering a pregame speech just days before his release.
Offensive Line Question Marks Remain
Another surprising move was the decision to cut undrafted rookie Kyle Hergel. Given the Saints' ongoing issues on the offensive line, Hergel’s versatility and performance in camp seemed to make him a lock for the roster.
He even saw significant time with the first-string offense at left guard. However, the Saints chose to go a different route, perhaps eyeing potential additions from the waiver wire to bolster their depth. This move, coupled with the release of Shane Lemieux, indicates that the Saints are still searching for the right combination to protect quarterback Derek Carr.
The Unexpected Rise of Rico
On a more positive note, cornerback Rico Payton earned a spot on the roster, beating out Shemar Jean-Charles, who had been running with the first team in the absence of Marshon Lattimore and Paulson Adebo.
Payton’s performance during training camp, where he consistently improved and impressed coaches, secured his place on the team.
His ability to contribute on special teams likely played a significant role in this decision.
Other Notable Cuts
The Saints also parted ways with several other players, including wide receiver Equanimeous St. Brown, offensive lineman Shane Lemieux, and linebacker Khaleke Hudson. Many projected each of these players to make the final roster, but the competitive nature of the Saints' camp led to tough decisions.
St. Brown, in particular, was a surprise given his strong preseason performance—especially the final game at home in the dome.
Practice Squad and Future Moves
As the Saints prepare for their season opener against the Carolina Panthers on September 8, attention now shifts to establishing the practice squad. Several players released, including kicker Charlie Smyth and defensive back Shemar Jean-Charles, could be brought back to provide depth and continue their development.
Smyth, part of the NFL’s International Pathway Program, might find a place on the practice squad due to his unique background and potential.
Head coach Dennis Allen acknowledged the difficulty of the roster cuts, emphasizing the dedication and effort each player brought to the team. “Every single one of them gave their heart and soul to me and this organization,” Allen said, emphasizing the emotional weight of the day’s decisions.
As the Saints move forward, they will be closely watched as they navigate injuries and search for the right talent to compete in an NFC South division that is up for grabs.
