The methodology behind the 'Best Cities to Retire in America' list

To determine which U.S. cities offer the best retirement experience, the USA Today Homefront research team ranked the 329 cities on factors such as tax friendliness, health care availability, housing costs, and number of leisure activities.

What made Tyler, Texas tops on this list?

Located roughly 100 miles east of Dallas, Tyler scored high in several areas and it features affordable homes, no income tax, and prices 7.7% lower than the national average.

While all of Texas enjoys no state income tax, a typical home in Tyler is priced at $257,181, which is 29% less than the typical U.S. home.

Tyler is also home to the Tyler Rose Garden and the annual Texas Rose Festival. And its outdoor beauty extends beyond flowers. Lake Tyler and Lake Palestine are nearby and great for those who enjoy water views and recreation.

The city features many great restaurants and entertainment attractions, including the Caldwell Zoo, the Tyler Museum of Art, and the Historic Aviation Memorial Museum.
