LAFAYETTE, La. (KPEL) -- The University of Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns football team will honor Mickey Shunick during the upcoming college football season.

UL players will wear on their helmets a decal depicting a woman riding a bike with Mickey's name underneath.

Troy Wingerter, Director of Football Operations, said once the details of her struggle to survive were revealed, the team was inspired by her courage.

"Obviously it went from viewing her as a victim to viewing her more as a heroine, if nothing else," Wingerter said. "She was so courageous and showed so much gumption and ferociousness, we were very very proud for lack of a better term."

Wingerter said it speaks to the honor of the team that the seniors and other players on the squad made a decision to honor a fellow student this year.

The idea was proposed by a staff member, and the team and Head Coach Mark Hudspeth approved it.

The Cajuns open up their season against Lamar Sept. 1 at Cajun Field.
