USS Orleck Wins Reprieve From Scrap Yard With $25K Grant
LAKE CHARLES, La. (AP) — The USS Orleck has received a one year reprieve from the scrap yard.
The American Press reports the Calcasieu Parish Police Jury granted organizers $25,000 in November that is being used for parts and other maintenance. The grant should allow the ship to remain in Lake Charles and make ends meet in 2017 while organizers try to figure out its next location.
The board that run's the ship's museum had been considering selling it to scrap yard this fall due to low funds and questions about its future.
Ron Williams, executive director at the USS Orleck Naval Museum, says the current location doesn't encourage enough foot traffic and wasn't supposed to be the ship's final home.
But organizers have struggled to find a permanent resting spot for the vessel.
