Watch Multiple Video Angles of Capital One Tower Implosion in Lake Charles, Louisiana
In a dramatic and highly anticipated event, the Capital One Tower, once the tallest building in Lake Charles, was brought down in a controlled implosion Saturday morning.
Crowds gathered for hours, with people lining the streets and even boats pulling up to the waterfront, eager to witness the historic moment.
The tower, heavily damaged during Hurricane Laura in 2020, had stood vacant and unusable ever since, becoming a constant reminder of the hurricane's destruction.
The implosion, which began at 8 a.m., was executed by Lloyd D. Nabors Demolition.
Spectators and video enthusiasts alike captured the spectacle from every possible angle—drone footage from above, videos from boats on the water, and recordings from various news outlets, city officials, and the general public all combined to provide a comprehensive visual narrative of the building’s final moments.
"We ask for your patience as crews work to safely clear the area following the Capital One building implosion," the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office stated in a message to the public.
"Please be aware that road closures and the exclusion zone remain in effect. For your safety, we urge everyone to stay out of these closed areas until it is safe to do so. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding. Your safety is our priority! Please follow official updates for when access will be restored."
The Sheriff's Office shared exclusive footage of the implosion from a Marine Enforcement vessel, offering a unique perspective on the event.
The Capital One Tower, originally known as the CM Tower, had been a topic of debate among Lake Charles residents.
Some had hoped for its restoration, while others viewed its deteriorating state as an eyesore. After a prolonged battle with its insurance company, owner Hertz Investment Group eventually decided to demolish the building, setting aside $7 million from the insurance settlement to fund the implosion.
Despite the city's efforts to find a buyer, the extensive damage proved too significant for potential developers to take on.
Now that the tower is gone, attention turns to the future of 1 Lakeshore Drive. While the site remains a pile of rubble for now, Mayor Nic Hunter has expressed the city's commitment to attracting new developments that will benefit downtown Lake Charles.
Demolition crews are expected to spend the coming weeks clearing the area, marking the start of a new chapter for the city.
