If it hasn't happened to you yet, it probably will. That one time you get so excited about pizza you forget it's hot and you take a big bite, a really big bite. And it's at that very moment that you feel the 4 million degrees cheese attaching itself to the roof of your mouth. And you just know that you will never be able to eat or taste food ever again. It's not pleasant but there are some things you can do to help decrease the pain and begin the heal.

The first action you should take is to try to get something cold in your mouth. Cold water a cold beverage, ice cream or yogurt will help with the pain and immediately start the healing process. Even a popsicle or ice cubes will do the trick. Milk will cool and soothe the pain as well.

Fresno Dental Professionals suggest gargling with salt water using a mixture of 1/2 teaspoon of salt in 8 ounces of water. This will clean and disinfect the roof of your mouth.

Your mouth may take a week or longer to heal. To speed up the healing process avoid acidic foods and foods that are abrasive such as potato chips or peanuts.

If you are in a lot of pain, try taking ibuprofen (Read and follow dosing information). A second or third-degree burn could cause you to have nerve damage. If the burn is more serious than you initially thought, see a doctor immediately.

Oh, and let the rest of that pizza cool before you continue to eat it.
