LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) — A commission that is piecing together what could be a new Lafayette government has developed a basic outline of what it might resemble.

The Lafayette Charter Commission has been meeting weekly to develop recommendations that could include returning to the once-separate city and parish governments that were merged in 1996 to form Lafayette City-Parish Consolidated Government.

The Advocate reports the commission, which met Monday night, has developed a working model that calls for a 7-member city council and nine-member parish council.

The two separate councils would replace the nine-member City-Parish Council.

The commission is set to make recommendations by April on changes to local government.
