Self-defense will be the topic of the day in St. Landry Parish as officials there host a free women's safety course on May 5.

Sheriff Bobby Guidroz says the sheriff's office, along with St. Landry Crime Stoppers, Eunice Black Belt Academy, and Harmony Lodge #410 will host the women's self-defense and firearms safety course.

"The course is a hands on course having the participants  practice techniques on bags and finally fighting a 'padded up' aggressor," says Captain Jimmy Darbonne with the sheriff's office.

Women will also have the opportunity to take a firearms safety course where they'll be allowed to practice on a firing range under the supervision of instructors from the sheriff's office.

"The instructors will answer questions and familiarize the women with their firearms and shooting live rounds," Darbonne says.

He says participants should bring their own guns with at least 30 rounds of ammunition.

A free lunch will be provided in between the self-defense course and the firearms course. Anyone interested should call the training center at (337) 948-7599. The courses should last around five hours.
