The murder rate in Lafayette increased by one, according to preliminary police statistics that reflect up to November of 2010.    There were twelve murders in 2010 and eleven in 2009.

Police Chief Jim Craft tells KPEL news there's been a significant decrease in crime "overall".  Preliminary reports show a three-to-five percent decrease overall.  A big difference for the department compared to the one percent increase in 2009.

There were more property crimes in 2010 than there were crimes against people.  The percentage of crimes against people dropped a few percentage points.

In fact, for nearly the third year in a row there's been a decrease in crimes against people which is a big deal for the department.

Chief Craft says the community policing philosophy coupled with the COMSTAT program which has improved efficiency at police precincts are key contributors to the overall decrease.
