Macy’s has announced that its Acadiana Mall location in Lafayette will be closing its doors, making it the only Macy’s store in Louisiana slated for closure. According to The Acadiana Advocate, the decision is part of the company’s larger plan to streamline operations and return to profitability by reducing the number of underperforming locations nationwide.

The Acadiana Mall store, which occupies over 185,000 square feet, is one of four anchor stores in the shopping center, alongside JCPenney and Dillard’s. Sears, another former anchor tenant, closed its doors in 2017 and was later replaced by a CubeSmart storage facility. Macy’s exit marks a pretty big loss for the mall and leaves local shoppers with fewer department store options.

The Lafayette store is among 66 Macy’s locations set to close in the first quarter of 2025, representing 25% of the retailer's overall square footage but contributing less than 10% of its total sales, according to the company. Macy’s plans to focus on its remaining 350 stores by enhancing customer experiences through upgrades like improved visual displays and additional staff in fitting rooms and shoe departments. The retailer also aims to pivot toward the luxury market, including expansions in its Bloomingdale’s and Bluemercury brands.

For Louisiana shoppers, this closure leaves Macy’s with just two locations in the state—at Lakeside Shopping Center in Metairie and the Mall of Louisiana in Baton Rouge. The Acadiana Mall closure is part of a broader restructuring effort announced last year, in which Macy’s committed to shuttering 150 stores over three years after reporting declining sales and a fourth-quarter loss.

While Macy’s is taking steps to reinvent itself, the closure of the Lafayette store marks the end of an era for Acadiana Mall shoppers who have relied on the iconic retailer for everything from clothing to home goods.
