Applications Filed For New LNG Facility In Cameron Parish

Company officials with Commonwealth LNG based out of Houston Texas have filed applications with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission as some of the first steps necessary in building a new liquified natural gas export facility in Cameron Parish.

The proposed facility would sit on 400 acres of land and a final decision on the project is expected to come sometime next year. Should the project receive the go-ahead from company investors and the federal energy commissioners the plant could be exporting liquified natural gas as soon as 2024.

According to reports half a dozen companies are reportedly interested in establishing LNG export facilities in or near Cameron Parish. There are also plans in the works for possibly two more companies joining the list of energy producers that would like to establish a base for LNG exports in the state.

When completed the proposed Commonwealth LNG facility would be housed in six units. Those units would create and ship at least 8.4 million tons and up to 9.5 million tons of LNG each year by 2024. The total cost of the project is estimated to be close to $4 billion. The project would also create about 2,000 construction jobs as the facility is built.
