One of the New Orleans area's most interesting and educational attractions is closing. The Audubon Butterly and Insectarium has announced it will be closing in its current location at the U.S. Customs House on Canal Street. The facility has been closed since March over concerns about the coronavirus. Now, officials have just made the closure official.

However, if you have an interest in the many exhibits housed at the facility, don't fret. The plan is to rehouse many of these exhibits in a renovated space at the Aquarium of the Americas. The move is expected to save the Audubon Nature Institute about one million dollars in annual lease payments.

The effects of the coronavirus pandemic and the limiting of crowds and public gatherings have really made for a rough year at the Audubon Institute. In addition to operating the  Butterfly Garden and Insectarium and the Aquarium of the Americas the institute also operates the Audubon Zoo and Nature Center.

Officials remain optimistic that the temporary closure and move of the Butterfly Garden and Insectarium will help offset financial difficulties the group has had to deal with during the coronavirus pandemic.
