Washington, DC –

US Congressman Charles W. Boustany, Jr. (R-Southwest Louisiana) today sent a letter to the Obama Administration encouraging a stronger effort to promote Gulf Coast seafood with other Members of Congress.

Members argued that Americans are still reluctant to eat seafood from the Gulf of Mexico in the wake of the BP disaster. Boustany strongly encouraged the Administration to take proactive measures to dispel myths against the safety of Gulf Coast seafood, which were promised by the President and will in turn revitalize the industry in coastal states like Louisiana.

“Gulf Coast seafood is back in business,” Boustany said. “We need a clear message from the Obama Administration that our seafood is safe for consumption. A strong, united effort in this message will ensure a rebirth in this industry and restore confidence in the hard working men and women on the coast.”

“Our biggest challenge is perception and will be for quite some time,” said Ewell Smith, Executive Director of the Louisiana Seafood Promotion & Marketing Board. “A sustained messaging initiative to the American public from the President and federal agencies will help dramatically. The key to this is a long term consistent message informing Americans the efforts made by our agencies.”

Congressman Boustany is a leading voice on coastal issues in Louisiana, and has worked tirelessly to restore jobs throughout the Gulf Coast in the wake of the BP disaster and moratorium.
