Washington, DC – Representative Charles Boustany, (R-Southwest Louisiana) made the following statement today in reaction to the US Chamber of Commerce’s State of American Business Address, delivered by Chamber President and CEO Thomas Donahue.

“To echo President Donahue, we must ensure that this economic recovery becomes a jobs recovery,” Boustany said. “While I am pleased to hear that the signs are beginning to point towards a recovery, I know it will take much work and effort on our part to ensure that it continues.  We must do more to promote American energy production and convince the administration to drop the de facto moratorium, which has been hurting job growth across the Gulf Coast. We must continue to encourage business growth and development in our country, while promoting trade and competitiveness abroad. While there may be signs of growth, I know too many Louisianans are still looking for work.”

Chamber of Commerce President Donahue noted many factors contributing to the recovery, including the extension of the Bush era tax cuts and progress on trade agreements, but cautioned that unemployment, excessive regulations on business and growth, and continued concerns on housing and construction remain problematic.  Donahue also noted that the health care law, which the Chamber opposed last year, has become a hindrance to economic recovery and supports repeal.
As a member of the House Ways and Means committee and chair of the Subcommittee on Oversight, Congressman Boustany said that he plans to work closely with his colleagues to implement many of these recommendations to continue the country on its road to recovery. “We plan to focus much of our attention on revising the tax code to make it easier for American businesses to compete, which in turn will create jobs,” Boustany said.  “I also plan to use my chair on Oversight to highlight the job killing aspects of the health care bill.  We need to look for ways to promote meaningful health care reform that includes emphasis on high quality doctor-patient relationships, lower costs and a wider range of choices for families and businesses.”
