Coronavirus Still Affecting Cruise and Train Travel in Louisiana
The trade group Cruise Lines International Association has announced that the suspension of cruise ship sailings from United States ports has been extended through September 15th. This basically an extension of a policy that has been in place since mid-March of this year.
The association whose memberships include most major cruise lines including Royal Caribbean, Carnival, Norwegian, Princess, Celebrity, MSC, and Disney Cruise Line hopes the delay in sailings will help the industry and the nation better deal with the spread and eventual mitigation of COVID-19.
Several of the member cruise lines had announced tentative plans to begin sailing as early as July 31st but in order to do that each carrier would have had to provide the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and detailed plan on safety measures and procedures.
While many cruise lines had reportedly been working on plans for July sailings, none of those plans have yet to be announced. The new edict from the CLIA has basically taken those plans out of consideration.
Cruise lines and air travel aren't the only modes of transportation that have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Amtrak has announced that it will curtail service on many of its long-distance and nationwide routes effective October 1st.
Some of the routes that will be affected include the California Zephyr, the Capitol Limited, and the City of New Orleans. Amtrak officials say the curtailment in services could last into the Summer of 2021.
