30-year-old Joseph Jean-Louis of Lafayette has been arrested on drug and gun charges after two men broke into his Paradise Street home early Wednesday morning.

Lafayette Police Corporal Paul Mouton says two masked men entered the home around 3:00 a.m. Once inside, Cpl. Mouton says Jean-Louis fired multiple shots and gunfire was exchanged, leaving one of the suspects, 43-year-old Spencer James Francis of Lafayette, dead of multiple gunshot wounds. Mouton says Francis died on the porch of the residence.

Authorities are still looking for at least a second suspect, who was seen riding away in a light-colored car. "Possibly there may be more persons involved because, obviously, there was someone operating the vehicle that the individual got into."

Jean-Louis has been booked into the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center on charges of Possession With the Intent to Distribute Schedule II Controlled Dangerous Substances and Possession of a Firearm in the Presence of a Controlled Dangerous Substance.

Cpl. Mouton says the case remains under investigation. Call Lafayette Police or Crime Stoppers at (337) 232-TIPS.
