A rash of suspicious gunfire in Amelia has St. Mary Parish Sheriff's deputies vigilantly combing the area for answers.

Sheriff's spokesperson Traci Landry reported 911 dispatchers began receiving calls early Wednesday morning regarding citizens hearing gunfire near Bailey's Lane and West Side Park Lane in Amelia.

Around 1 a.m., deputies arrived on scene and found a 35-year-old man with a gunshot wound on his back. He was taken to Teche Regional Medical Center where it was determined he was grazed by a bullet.

The victim told investigators he was driving his SUV from Bailey's Lane onto Lake Palourde Road when gunshots struck the vehicle and grazed him.

Later in the day, while detectives were investigating the scene, they heard gunfire in the Friendship Alley area. At approximately the same time, residents called in reports of gunfire.

Responding deputies found no property damage and have received no reports of damage or injury.

Landry said residents should continue to report suspicious activity immediately to the Sheriff's Office at 985 -384-1622.
