A former worker with the Opelousas Housing Authority is facing a federal conspiracy charge.

The U.S. Attorney's Office in Lafayette says Garnette Thomas' job was to make sure that the agency's bids from contractors conformed to federal and state laws.

Federal prosecutors allege that Thomas went around the rules in what they claim was an alleged scheme to benefit a contractor that they have dubbed "K.A."

The information was part of a bill of information charging her with one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud.

Thomas' job was grant and capital funds coordinator between 2005 and 2009.

Prosecutors allege Thomas conspired to award housing authority contracts to one particular contractor for a two year period between 2007 through 2009.
