The fate of Lafayette's controversial red light camera program could be decided as early as next week.

City-Parish Joey Durel is expected to ask the council next week for permission to begin renegotiating the contract with Redflex Traffic Systems, Inc.

If approved, Durel could begin forming a new agreement with the company in order to keep the program intact. But if the council chooses to reject that resolution, Durel would not be able to begin negotiations in order to keep the program running.

Regardless, the council is expected to vote on an ordinance in May which would officially remove the cameras from Lafayette.
