We're getting traffic cameras in school zones, but the others are gone.

Well, at least they're gone for now. According to Mayor-President Joel Robideaux, the traffic cameras at traffic signals and the infamous speed vans that were sprinkled throughout Lafayette as a result of the cities contract with RedFlex will "not be coming back."

The cameras have been gone since June 2017 when Robideaux mentioned his team was negotiating with American Traffic Solutions to take over, but it seems like they will only be providing traffic cameras in some school zones.

Placing the cameras in school zones aim to increase safety and also generate money that will be "put back into the police department," according to Councilman Kenneth Boudreaux.

Once a contractor is selected, the process for approval will take a few months.
