Lafayette Ticket Amnesty Up For Consideration Again
This issue of whether or not there will be a 30-day amnesty period for anyone who has not paid their red-light camera fines will be back up for consideration again tonight at the Lafayette City Parish Council meeting.
For weeks the council has had the item on the agenda, but it has been deferred several times as legal issues related to who will pay to collect the over fines. Tonight the council will consider splitting late fees with contractor Redflex if they also share in the cost of collecting the overdue fines.
Since the program was started in 2007, some motorists have refused to pay their tickets. Some people have thousands of dollars in fines and late fees.
City-Parish Attorney Mike Hebert says most people owe only between $125 and $300 dollars.
