The collision between flight AA5342 and a military black hawk helicopter claimed the lives of 67 people Wednesday night.

The aircraft was mere minutes away from landing at the Ronald Reagan National Airport when the deadly crash occurred just before 9 pm Wednesday. The plane was instructed to use runway 33 instead of 1, putting it directly in the path of the Black Hawk helicopter that was on a training mission. Moments later, they collided and fell into the Potomac River below.

Officials have reported that there are no known survivors, but 28 bodies have been recovered from the Potomac River as of Thursday morning.

Another American Airlines aircraft that took off from New Orleans was just 2.5 miles behind AA5342 when the crew was instructed to go around instead of landing as initially planned. According to WBRZ, the flight had already descended to 800 feet and slowed to 130mph, preparing to land when the crew was told to ascend back to 3,000.

FlightAware.com shows flight AA3130 loop around the DC airport before rerouting and flying to Baltimore. 27 minutes later, the plane safely landed at the Baltimore-Washington International Airport at 9:15.

A flight radar shared on X shows just how close these two flights really were before the crash occurred.

Another video shows all the TV screens showing coverage of the plane crash as they fly over DC,which had to be extremely frightening for passengers.

Victims of the crash have started to be identified by their loved ones, including Angela Yang and Sean Kay, who were ice skating partners. Other skaters and coaches were also believed to be on this flight.
