Hurricane Dorian Strengthens as it Heads Towards Landfall
According to the National Hurricane Center, Dorian has reached hurricane strength and could cause some major problems. Tropical Storm Dorian strengthened to a hurricane Wednesday afternoon as it bears down on the US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.
Dorian became a hurricane near the island of St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands, according to the National Hurricane Center. Winds have reportedly topped 110 mph near St. Thomas.
Some hurricane experts say that by the time Dorian reaches Florida this weekend, it could be a Category 3 or stronger. Currently, Dorian is expected to hit Florida just south of Jacksonville.
Puerto Rico is not expected to take a direct hit from the storm. However, experts say this could still test the island's electrical system, which was just recently repaired from damage sustained due to Hurricane Maria two years ago.
