One Dead, One Injured Following Shooting on W. Gilman Street in Lafayette
One person is dead and another is injured following an early afternoon shooting on Wednesday, July 5, 2023, in Lafayette.
The Lafayette Police Department was dispatched to the 500 block of W. Gilman Street at 1:35 pm on Wednesday in reference to a shooting incident. Upon arrival, officers located one victim suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
The scene was secured and life-saving measures were provided to the male victim. He was then transported to a local hospital.
Unfortunately, the victim would die later in the afternoon as a result of his injuries from the shooting. The victim has been identified by LPD as Kvon O'neil, 20, of Lafayette.
After an investigation, a suspect has been apprehended and arrested in connection with the incident. The suspect is a juvenile so the identity will not be released to the public.
The suspect has been arrested on eight counts of attempted 1st-degree murder and one count of accessory after the fact to 2nd-degree murder.
Police determined that just prior to this shooting incident a previous shooting incident took place at Big Boys Tobacco Plus located at 812 N. University Avenue in Lafayette.
During this incident, another victim was located with an apparent gunshot wound to their person. The victim was transported to a local hospital where they are currently in stable condition.
Crime scenes were established and investigators have been working to determine leads.
LPD has not announced if the two shootings are related.
