Welsh, Louisiana Boy Airlifted to Lafayette Following Hit and Run
Police in the small community of Welsh, Louisiana say a two-year-old boy was injured when he was struck by a vehicle. According to reports, the child was playing near the end of his driveway in the Welsh community when he was struck by a white pickup truck.
Welsh Police were called to the scene of the crash at about 6:15 last night. When they arrived they observed the young child had severe "road rash" or scrapes and brush burns from the pavement, on his head and legs. The injuries were deemed serious enough that the child was airlifted to a Lafayette Hospital. According to a subsequent update on the Welsh Police Facebook page, the boy was in stable condition and is expected to recover.
Witnesses at the scene on Bowers Road say the driver of the white pickup swerved to avoid another vehicle in the roadway. It is believed the driver of the white pickup was unaware he had made contact with the small child who was reported to have been playing near the street between a U-haul truck and another vehicle.
KPLC Television in Lake Charles spoke to witnesses at the scene. The boy's mother told reporters from the TV station that at least three people attempted to chase down the driver of the pickup truck but the driver did not stop.
According to Welsh Police, the driver was made aware of the incident via the Police Department's social media page. He told officers he planned to come down to the station to discuss the incident but officers were able to track the driver down first.
At this time it is believed the driver was unaware that his vehicle struck the child which would explain why he did not stop. Welsh Police, according to the KPLC story are describing the incident as an unfortunate accident and no charges are being pressed at this time.
