The Lafayette Police Department has concluded its 30-day Red Light Awareness Campaign, and the numbers are in. Over the course of the five-week enforcement effort, officers issued a total of 407 citations for red light violations across the city.

The campaign, which began on March 11 and ended on April 11, aimed to reduce crashes and increase awareness about the dangers of running red lights. Traffic officers focused their efforts on some of the city’s most problematic intersections—areas repeatedly named by both police and residents as red-light trouble spots.

The weekly breakdown of citations was definitely interesting:

  • Week 1: 106 citations
  • Week 2: 80 citations
  • Week 3: 79 citations
  • Week 4: 45 citations
  • Week 5: 97 citations

After a steady decline in citations from Week 1 through Week 4, officers reported a noticeable uptick in violations during the final week of the campaign—an increase that suggests some drivers may have let their guard down or assumed enforcement efforts had tapered off.

The intersections under the most scrutiny during the campaign included:

  • Johnston Street at Ambassador Caffery Parkway
  • Kaliste Saloom Road at Ambassador Caffery Parkway
  • Kaliste Saloom Road at East Pinhook Road
  • West Pinhook Road at Surrey Street
  • Cameron Street at University Avenue
  • Evangeline Thruway at Willow Street
  • Louisiana Avenue at Willow Street

According to the Lafayette Police Department, while this targeted campaign has ended, officers will continue routine monitoring of high-violation intersections. Chief Trouard has also directed the department’s Traffic Unit to remain proactive, responding to ongoing community concerns about dangerous driving behavior—especially at problematic intersections.

After seeing these numbers, even if you're abiding by the law, you should keep your head on a swivel and be safe.
