Lafayette’s Second Harvest Food Bank Needs Volunteers
We are slowly, but surely moving out of quarantine, and back to normal life. Whatever that means. For some, it's back to business as usual, but for others, it just means looking forward to an anxiety filled summer.
According to the Feeding America website, in Louisiana, there are currently 773,850 people struggling with hunger, and 255,640 of those are children. So it's even more important for us to help our friends and neighbors right now, in this unsure time. Second Harvest Food Bank is in need of volunteers for their Lafayette location. They are receiving more and more donations thanks to a federal program, and some of those include perishable foods that need to get out as quickly as possible. And that takes a lot of hands on work, says Community Outreach Coordinator Brittany Bowie. According to a story from our TV partners at KATC, Bowie says the food bank is receiving weekly shipments of sweet potatoes from local farmers - between 11,000 and 12,000 pounds every week - that need to be distributed quickly.
Volunteers can go in groups, or individually, and can apply here, or by calling 337-237-7711. Bowie tells KATC that volunteers are most needed from Tuesday through Friday, and they have morning and afternoon shifts available. This might be perfect if you have a church or youth group that is looking for some service hours as we head into summer. Or if you just want to do something nice for some people who really need a helping hand right now.
