NEW IBERIA, La. (AP) — Construction has begun on a new shelter for stray cats in Iberia Parish — funded by the posthumous donation of a local animal lover.

The new addition to the Iberia Humane Society shelter is being funded with money left to the shelter by Lawrence Golden Jr., a prominent businessman who died in 2009. In his will, he left a donation for the shelter large enough to fund the construction of the new home for Iberia's homeless cats, according to The Daily Iberian newspaper.

The shelter once had a cinder block building that housed cats but the roof was blown off during Hurricane Gustav in 2008.
