Governor Bobby Jindal is asking the Army Corps of Engineers to increase water flow into the Atchafalaya Basin.

In a letter to Major General John Peabody, Jindal states that lower than average water levels are affecting water quality and crawfish harvests.

"Some areas that crawfishermen were recently able to fish are now inaccessible due to low water levels," Jindal wrote in that letter.

Water levels at the Butte La Rose gauge have dropped to between six and seven feet, down from their historic average of 15 feet in late April. Jindal says an increased water flow could be achieved without causing adverse effects on navigation on either the Mississippi or Atchafalya Basin systems.
