LSU Opens With Big Win Over Miami
Jacob Phillips' 45 yard interception return highlighted a 17 point second quarter as LSU opened their 2018 season with a 33-17 win over Miami (FL) Sunday night in Arlington, TX.
After the teams traded field goals to start the game,, LSU broke a long play as Nick Brossette scored on a 50 yard run to cap a six play, 72 yard drive, putting LSU in the lead 10-3.
The Tigers' defense stiffened and the LSU offense went back to work on a 58 yard drive on eleven plays with Brossette scoring this second touchdown on a one yard run to give the Tigers a 17-3 lead. Cole Tracy added a 21 yard field goal to increase the lead to 20-3.
LSU's lead grew to 27-3 just 35 seconds later on Phillips' interception return to give LSU a commanding lead at the half. The LSU defense held Miami without a third down conversion (0-6) in the first half.
LSU drove 53 yards in seven plays for another Tracy field goal, this one from 21 yards to make the score 30-3 and the transfer from Assumption kicked his fourth of the night after an interception by free safety John Battle, an LSU record 54 yarder to make the score 33-3.
The Hurricanes (0-1) finally put a drive together, going 77 yards on eleven plays with quarterback Malik Rosier scoring from three yards out to make the score 33-10 early in the fourth quarter. And, on the next possession, Miami needed just four plays to go 74 yards as Rosier hit Brian Hightower with a 32 yard touchdown pass to get the Hurricanes within 33-17.
Joe Burrow, making his first start for LSU, completed 11-24 passes for 140 yards. Justin Jefferson caught five of those passes for 81 yards. Brossette gained 125 yards on 22 carries and a pair of scores.
Miami outgained LSU 342-296. The Tigers contained Rosier, allowing just 15-35 passes for 259 yards.
