LSU's live Tiger mascot, Mike VI, has died after a battle with cancer. The school announced his passing earlier today.

He was peacefully euthanized, as his cancer was continuing to spread.

Mike was diagnosed with a rare form of inoperable cancer in May. After undergoing a surgery in the summer in hopes to slow down the cancer, a CT scan last week revealed the tumor had grown and Mike didn't have long to live.

An 11-year old Bengal-Siberian Tiger, Mike arrived at LSU in 2007 after being adopted from a rescue facility. He made appearances during a National Championship season.

A hit with fans and families who walked through LSU's campus, Mike VI was typically a playful Tiger who enjoyed the visiting eyes who passed by his on-campus habitat.

In time, LSU hopes to get a Mike VII.

“We intend to find a young, male tiger that is in need of a good home,” said Dr. David Baker of LSU's Veterinary school. “We intend to obtain one from a rescue facility.”

According to LSU, the tradition of the live Tiger mascot has been part of the University for 80 years. The first Tiger for LSU was purchased from the Little Rock Zoo in 1936.
