Meeting Held To Discuss Lafayette Regional Expressway

It is officially the biggest complaint that residents of Lafayette have about their community. Traffic. Making traffic less congested around Lafayette and all of Acadiana for that matter was the subject of a meeting that took place last night.

The Lafayette Metropolitan Expressway Commission hosted an open house at the South Regional Library on Thursday evening and hundreds of people showed up to hear what they had to say.

The Expressway Commission detailed plans for a four-lane toll road highway that would run from I-49 in Carencro near the cities of Scott and Duson and around the west side of Lafayette. The toll road would then connect to LA 88 near Youngsville and New Iberia.

The projected cost of the project would be $1.2 billion. That cost of the project would be covered by tolls collected from drivers who use the new roadway as well as money received from federal and state governments as well as private investors.

Members of the Expressway Commission touted reduced traffic congestion and an alternate hurricane evacuation route as just some of the benefits of this proposed roadway.
