A Calcasieu Parish grand jury has indicted a Moss Bluff mother and grandmother for allegedly abusing two 17-year-old girls.

Beth McGee, a spokeswoman for the district attorney's office says Verna Kennerson, the girls' adoptive mother, was indicted on 13 counts of cruelty to a juvenile.

The grand jury indicted their grandmother, Mary Kennerson, on one count of cruelty to a juvenile.

The women were booked on July 6 after neighbors reported seeing the girls eating from a trash can, Calcasieu Parish Sheriff Tony Mancuso said at the time of the incident.

Mancuso said an investigation found that Kennerson neglected to give the girls food, physically abused them and made them sleep in an outdoor shed.
