New Law Sets Age Requirement to Purchase Canned Whipped Cream in New York

Reports say that a new law has gone into effect in New York and requires people to be at least 21 years of age to buy canned whipped cream. The legislation was passed in an effort to deter the use of "whippets" amongst young people.

According to reports, stores in New York are now requiring customers to be at least 21 years old to buy a can of whipped cream. The legislation for this new law was passed back in October of 2021 but is just now going into effect.

Why is there an age restriction on canned whipped cream in New York?

Reports say that the goal of the new law is to combat the usage of whipped cream chargers, also known as "whippets".

The whipped cream chargers reportedly contain nitrous oxide, which oftentimes is used in oral surgeries as a pain reliever. Nitrous oxide can reportedly become highly addictive if used improperly.

When speaking about the new law involving canned whipped cream and nitrous oxide, New York State Senator Joseph Addabbo Jr. reportedly stated, "Sadly, young people buy and inhale this gas to get ‘high’ because they mistakenly believe it is a ‘safe’ substance. This law will eliminate easy access to this dangerous substance for our youth".

The new law reportedly says that any business found violating the new law that bans the sale of canned whipped cream to persons under the age of 21 can be subjected to a civil penalty of up to $250 for a first offense. Each subsequent offense can be up to $500 according to reports.
