Pelicans Beat Celtics, Ryan Anderson Carted Off With Injury
The New Orleans Pelicans (15-16) earned a gutsy 95-92 win in Boston versus the Celtics (13-20) last night, but at a cost. How much of a cost is yet to be determined.
Ryan Anderson, New Orleans leading scorer, fell to the floor early in the 4th quarter after colliding with Boston forward Gerald Wallace. After several minutes of lying on the hardwood, a stretcher was brought out to transport him to a hospital.
"We are just praying for his health. He looked like he was OK," explained head coach Monty Williams. "I was more worried about his mother. I know she's at home, a nervous wreck, so hopefully she hears this message and is cool with the fact that he's OK and in good hands."
According to reports, Anderson suffered a cervical stinger. His status moving forward is unknown at this time. Several of his teammates said he was "OK", and Anderson gave a thumbs up from the stretcher as he was carried off the floor.
The Pelican players were clearly emotional, surrounding Anderson on the floor once they realized he wasn't getting up. On a positive note, they were able to lock down and slip by the Celtics for a nice road win.
"We were praying for him, but at the same time we've got to win a game," said Anthony Davis, whose defense and rebounding down the stretch was outstanding. "It's good that he's OK. We're praying for him."
Davis led the way for the winning team, scoring 23, grabbing 9 boards, and blocking 3 shots.
Tyreke Evans was aggressive off the bench, scoring 16, while Center Greg Stiemsma had his best game of the season, scoring 12 points on 6-7 shooting against his former team.
New Orleans' tough East Coast road swing continues tonight when they play the Pacers (25-6). Tip-off is set for 6:00.
