KENNER, La. (AP) — Sheriff's deputies say a New Orleans woman who tried to hit a deputy with her vehicle, was shot by the officer and wounded.

A sheriff's statement said 40-year-old Melissa Belanger was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries and will be charged with attempted murder.

The statement said a deputy spotted a truck early Friday reportedly linked to car burglaries in the New Orleans suburbs of Kenner and Metairie. During a chase, Sheriff Newell Normand says, the truck's driver rammed the passenger side of the deputy's vehicle. When the deputy got out, he says, the woman attempted to strike him with the pickup.

Normand says the officer fired three shots, striking her in both wrists. She drove two blocks, stopped and was arrested.

Normand said the woman and unidentified deputy are both white.
