Proposed Tax In City Of Scott Defeated

Voters in Scott turned out against a new sales tax. It would have benefitted police and fire protection, parks and rec and other city service.

The votes came in 55% against the tax and 45% in favor of the tax.

Shall the City of Scott, State of Louisiana (the “City”), under the provisions of Act No. 34 of the 2018 Regular Session of the Louisiana Legislature (the “Act”), and other constitutional and statutory authority, be authorized to levy and collect an additional one percent (1%) (the “Tax”) ($2,400,000 is expected at this time to be collected from the levy of the Tax for an entire year) upon the sale at retail, use, lease or rental, consumption, and storage for use or consumption, of tangible personal property and on sales of services in the City, all as defined by law, beginning October 1, 2019 and run in perpetuity, with the proceeds of the Tax (after paying the reasonable and necessary costs and expenses of collecting and administering the Tax), to be dedicated and used only and exclusively as follows: 66.66% to fund, maintain and provide police and fire protection and 33.33% to fund, maintain and provide parks and recreation, sewer, roads, drainage and economic development and authority to fund the proceeds of the Tax into bonds for the purposes stated herein and related capital improvements within the City in the manner provided by law?
