Some controversy at last night's Lafayette city-parish council meeting.

In a split decision, the council voted to keep a security fee in place which pays for police officers to patrol bars downtown. Bar owners believe the fee is unconstitutional and have vowed to challenge the fee in court.

The council also voted to require smart meters be installed in the homes of all LUS customers. A motion had originally been filed to allow homeowner to opt-out for a six-dollar monthly fee, but last night's vote effectively undoes that motion.
