Texas Woman Floored to Learn Bar Charged Her $80 to ‘Shake’ Drinks
Out on a recent girl's night out, a Dallas, Texas woman was shocked when she looked at her receipt to discover the establishment had charged a total of $80 for shaking and prepping her drinks.
Bar Charging To Shake And Prep Drinks
Bartending is a very demanding job.
It involves way more than just pouring drinks; it encompasses a broad range of skills such as customer service, drink mixing techniques.
Bartenders need to know a variety of drinks, from classic cocktails to local or modern creations.
From mixing and shaking, layering and free pouring, to great customer service, being a great bartender isn't easy.
Some drinks are really complicated, and it takes a skilled and experienced bartender to get it right.
The reward for knowing your craft and being a great bartender is, in theory, great tips and deservedly so.
However, there seems to be a growing trend of bars and restaurants charging for the actual prep of the drink, a charge separate from the price of the actual drink itself.
One woman enjoying a fun night out with friends recently found this out first hand and was shocked to look at her receipt to find the establishment had charged $80 for the prep and shaking of the drinks she and her friends had ordered.
Imagine going to a bar and ordering a beer, then finding out the bar charged you $1 for opening the beer.
That's kind of what's happening in some bars across the U.S. apparently.
TikToker blondeswhoeat recently posted a video about this new trend of "Prep Fees".
As she explains in her video, because of the prep fee, one of the margarita's ordered cost a whopping $70.
Now, this was apparently an expensive drink to begin with, but the establishment charged a $15 prep fee.
Keep in mind, she thought she was ordering a $55 margarita until she checked her receipt and discovered the $15 prep fee for this drink.

In the video, she goes on to break down the prep fees for each of the drinks ordered by her and her friends.
Depending on the drinks, the prep fees ranged from $3 all the way to $22.
We're talking prep fees, not the advertised price of the drink.
Now, we all know when it comes to tipping, people can be a little weird.
If you order a complicated drink that takes serious knowledge, skill, and experience to make, the bartender should be justly compensated when it comes to the tip.
Sadly, that's just not how it happens sometimes.
That being said, built in prep fees, or basically built in tips for drinks?
